Background

Swabalambi Samaj Unnayan Sangstha (SSUS) is a voluntary, non-political, nongovernmental organization of Bangladesh involved in development activities of National, International and Other Development Partners of Bangladesh. It was established in July 1999 with the initiation of a group of educated like minded social workers with an aim to promote the socio-economic and cultural status of the rural poor and vulnerable people, emphasizing the women and children through concretization, capacity building, institution building, capital formation, and imparting felt-need based problem-solving programs by adopting modern scientific technologies. SSUS put forward the idea of developing quality human building into reality through technical/vocational trainings and transform innovative ideas into sustainable development through agro-based and other skill-based development trainings. These are achieved through implementation of different types of development projects and programs under the different thematic areas in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SSUS believes in non-directive, bottom-up participatory, and integrated development frameworks and acts as a catalyst with its beneficiaries.


Since its inception in July 1999 SSUS has completed more than 30 development projects including research (Baseline, Census, Follow-up, Monitoring, In-depth Monitoring and Evaluation, Impact etc.) with the collecting involvement of social workers under the guidance of Md. Azad Mia, Chairman of SSUS. From the operation of view in the field of Dhaka, Noakhali, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar & Bagerhat through integrated programs, the organization has been expanded to 15 districts with 22 branches covering 17,800 beneficiaries of the country up to the day. The head office of SSUS is located at Shekhertek, Adabor, Dhaka. Within the very short time, the organization has recognized by the Govt. and other local, national, international and UN donors due to the sincerity, honesty, transparency and implementation of work activities as per project need within the time frame. Through IGA and other training program, SSUS supports to build capacity of poor, ultra-poor, unemployment youth group, farmers, disadvantaged and neglected women for developing their skill and generating income imparting life-oriented training programs and support innovative and replicable interventions. The livelihood interventions seek to access all assets - human, financial, physical, natural, social and political capital. So, rights-based activities could be a tool through which staff can facilitate participants accessing other forms of capital to improve their livelihoods.

Mission

Growing up the confidence of the poor and vulnerable people specially women and children through the provision of human development support and other innovative services are to enable them to acquire the necessary skills and resources to solve their problem.

Vision

The vision of SSUS is to achieve sustainable increase in living standards of the rural-urban poor people specially the vulnerable people including women and children by providing and empowering them with appropriate skills and technology.

Objectives

In line with the above vision of the organization, general objective of SSUS is to uplift the living standard of the poor people/ migrated people and their children while the specific objectives of the organization are:

  • Promote community-base sustainable development model incorporating sectoral concerns of the village through institutional development.
  • Ensure representation of marginal sector (particularly women) in the process of development planning activities.
  • Advocate for the inclusion of the results of the development plan in the Union, Upazila, District and there after to the national platform to promote transparency and accountability.
  • Documenting activities, strategies and project implementation through localized planning process.
  • Addressing women and children’s social problems identified in the community through awareness of their rights in the civil law including other issues like: divorce, women trafficking, dowry, acid throwing, women abuse, child labor/trafficking, etc. and facilitate the process to enjoy legal support as and when needed.
  • Protect basic human rights of the poorest or prevent “local elite from overpowering them” by providing legal education & awareness, human rights education and gender sensitivity including the “Shalish”.
  • Collaborate, replicate and share innovations with other NGOs, academic and research institutions with common goals and objectives in order to have common advocacy strategies and therefore, maximize impact and resources.
  • Continuation of the technical support, including the technical support packages like: using farmers as trainers.
  • Contribute to free individuals from the exploitative mechanism of the society by raising consciousness and self-esteem.
  • Contribute to make people aware about the root causes of poverty in order to encourage collective efforts to come out of the situation.
  • Contribute to intensify support on the role of women in development.
  • Contribute to motivate people undertake economic development activities to attain self-reliance.
  • Contribute to create employment opportunities, resources and skills for the underprivileged men and women to improve their livelihood
  • Build capacity and accountability of all local level institutions to provide better services
  • Reduce mother and child mortality rate as well as promote better health services in rural areas
  • Extend cooperative support to Government agencies, international and local non- government organizations and others institution involved in development activities.
